Discovering Morocco in 12 Day tour from Tangier to Imperial Cities and Merzouga Sahara Desert

Upon your arrival in Tangier, a historical port city at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, your guide will greet you and accompany you on a short drive to Asilah, a charming coastal town about 31 km south of Tangier. Asilah is famous for its well-preserved ramparts, built by the Portuguese in the 15th century, and its vibrant artistic community. You will stroll through the tranquil medina, admiring the colorful murals that adorn the town’s walls, and enjoy the serene views of the Atlantic from the city gates. The evening is yours to explore and enjoy the quiet beauty of this peaceful town.

After breakfast, depart from Asilah and travel south along the scenic Atlantic coast to Rabat, Morocco’s capital and a city rich in history and culture. Upon arrival, explore some of its most iconic landmarks, including the Hassan Tower, an unfinished 12th-century minaret that stands as a symbol of Rabat’s architectural heritage. Nearby, visit the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, an exquisite masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship that houses the tombs of the late king and his sons. Stroll through the Kasbah of the Udayas, a picturesque fortress with charming blue-and-white alleys, offering breathtaking views of the Bou Regreg River and the Atlantic Ocean. Continuing south, arrive in Casablanca.

After breakfast, we start our journey by visiting Casablanca, Morocco’s vibrant economic hub. Visit the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest and most stunning mosques in the world, renowned for its intricate tilework, towering minaret, and spectacular oceanfront setting. Afterward, take a leisurely walk along the Corniche, a lively coastal promenade lined with cafes and restaurants. Conclude the day with a visit to the Habous Quarter, a fascinating district that blends traditional Moroccan architecture with French colonial influences. Later on, we depart for Marrakech, a city of rich history and culture. Upon arrival, you will have the afternoon free to explore Jemaa el-Fna, the heart of Marrakech. This bustling square is full of energy with snake charmers, musicians, storytellers, and vibrant food stalls. The square transforms as the day progresses, becoming a lively open-air market in the evening.

Today, embark on a full-day guided tour of Marrakech, a city filled with historical treasures. Visit the majestic Koutoubia Mosque, famous for its 77-meter high minaret, and explore the ornate Bahia Palace, a fine example of Moroccan architecture. The day also includes a visit to the Saadian Tombs, where the tombs of the Saadian dynasty are beautifully decorated. Wander through the vibrant souks, where you can shop for spices, textiles, and artisan goods. Don’t miss the Majorelle Garden, a peaceful oasis of exotic plants and fountains, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent.

Today, we journey through the majestic High Atlas Mountains, passing through the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 meters), one of the highest roads in Morocco. We make a stop at Telouet, where you can explore the Kasbah of Telouet, once home to the powerful Glaoui family. Continuing on through the Ounila Valley, we arrive at Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its well-preserved mud-brick kasbahs. This ancient fortified village, a film favorite, has been featured in movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Afterward, we head to Ouarzazate, a city known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” home to film studios and the impressive Kasbah of Taourirt.

Today, we venture further into the desert, passing through the stunning Valley of Roses and the Dades Valley, both known for their rugged landscapes and dramatic rock formations. We will also visit Todra Gorges, a striking canyon with towering cliffs that rise over 300 meters high. By the evening, we reach Merzouga, a small desert town located near the towering Erg Chebbi dunes, where we will spend the night close to the sand dunes.

Today, immerse yourself in the Sahara Desert. Visit the village of Khamlia, known for its vibrant Gnaoua music played by the local African-descended Berbers. You will also get the chance to meet nomadic Berber families who still live in traditional tents, experiencing their way of life in the desert. In the late afternoon, embark on a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes to witness the magical sunset over the Sahara. After a peaceful evening in a luxury desert camp, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and music under the stars.

After an early morning sunrise over the dunes, we begin our journey north towards Midelt, a small town nestled between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountains. The drive is picturesque, offering glimpses of Morocco’s rugged natural beauty. Midelt is known for its apple orchards and stunning mountain landscapes. On our way to Fes, we stop in Azrou, a Berber village nestled in the famous Cedar Forest, where you can observe the playful Barbary macaques. Continuing our journey, we visit Ifrane, a quaint town often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its European-style architecture and lush surroundings. In the afternoon, we reach Fes, Morocco’s cultural and spiritual heart.

Spend the day exploring Fes el-Bali, the oldest and most vibrant part of the city, with a local guide. Discover the Al-Qarawiyyin University, the oldest continuously operating degree-granting university in the world, and explore the Royal Palace, the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), and the tanneries, where leather is still processed using traditional methods. Wander the narrow, bustling streets of the medina and soak up the sights, sounds, and smells of this ancient city.

After breakfast, we set off for a day of exploration. Our first stop is Meknes, one of Morocco’s ancient imperial cities. Here, we visit the monumental Bab Mansour Gate and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, dedicated to the sultan who made the city the capital of Morocco in the 17th century. We then continue to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can walk among ruins that date back to the 3rd century BC. In the afternoon, we make our way to Chefchaouen, the stunning blue-painted city nestled in the Rif Mountains.

Spend a leisurely day in Chefchaouen, wandering through its narrow, winding streets and soaking in the beauty of its blue-washed buildings. Explore the bustling souks, relax in one of the charming cafes, or hike to the Spanish Mosque for panoramic views of the town and surrounding mountains.
